Seal Vote March 17
March 18, 2010 – 2:00 pmStrong support from Marti Emerald and Donna Frye for our Marine Mammal Park proposal
The Natural Resources and Culture Committee hearing on March 17 ended with a deadlocked vote on the seal protection plan for Casa Beach with strong support from Chair Donna Frye and Councilmemeber Marti Emerald. Both councilwomen stood strong against Sherri Lightner who, afraid to openly vote against the seals and majority of her district, disingenuously used delaying tactics.
While DeMaio stated at the hearing he was pro-seal, he tried to appease both sides by siding with Lightner on the procedural issues. Despite literally no opposition to closing the beach during pupping season (even anti-seal folks agreed that the pups should be protected during this sensitive time), both Lighter and DeMaio requested more documentation on the issue including a staff report. Lighter requested more time in order to create a special task force, an extremely frustrating demand facing the fact that such task force was formed in the past and the research on the issue was conducted in depth for close to two decades now.

Huge thanks to all of you, tireless seal supporters, who came and spent two hours at the hearing waiving the “protect seals” signs and speaking in favor of our proposal. Despite your frustration, we have the good news for you: with the 2:2 vote and no recommendation from the NR&C, the APRL/LJFS proposal can go to the full council. We achieved our goal.
The Animal Protection and Rescue League/La Jolla Friends of the Seals proposal that asks for:
A. closure of the beach during pupping season
B. rope barrier rest of the year
and
C. declaring Casa Beach a marine mammal park
is endorsed by the following organizations:
The Humane Society of the United States
The Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
The Green Party of the San Diego County
Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation
and, of course, by our own
SealWatch San Diego

In the absence of Mike Lee who usually covers the seal issue, the Union Tribune made several mistakes in their article claiming that “without a recommendation, the proposed management options essentially die..” …
…nevertheless printing a marvelous picture of mom and pup #39, Liz, on its front page.

Black pup that was being seen at the beach without its mom for several days was spotted trying to nurse from another pup. I have to say, the older pup was very patient with our hungry “orphan” (we don’t know what pup it was or what happened to its mom) offering him some comfort for a little while:
Finally the pup was able to steal some milk from a sleeping female (her own pup is to the right) – that’s the way to do it:
The skinny pup was picked up by the Sea World rescue team on Sunday morning.

This whole seal thing is so stupid. People like Dorota and her friends obviously don’t have jobs and don’t actually produce anything that is beneficial to this country or our society. Real American’s wake up everyday and work and produce goods and wealth contributing to the betterment of society. Dorota and her comrades beg for handouts to they can pay for this useless project. I have a wife and two children to support so I can’t stand around all day holding a sign telling people to go on the beach. If you look at most of the people involved in these animal efforts you’ll find they are not married, they don’t have kids and they don’t have functional expanding lives to support. They support and hang with these animals because they are part of the animal pact not a functioning society made up of humans.

One very good suggestion I heard at that meeting via the webcast was by the SD council of divers guy (I think).
Anyways, he suggested that no matter hat the final decision, the CITY take over the docent program, and more importantly, the SALES OF T-SHIRTS, ETC, at the Children’s pool.
Apparently the look on Bryan Pease’s and Dorota’s faces was pure PANIC at that point.
I guess the thought of losing the 300000+ dollars a year the children’s pool raises for them is a bit frightening.
Funny, I would have thought it was about the seals, but I guess it’s really about the money.
That’s why they support the seals living in an unhealthy, overcrowded, unnatural enviornment. BECAUSE IT MAKES THEM MONEY.

It is like a gang that has taken over a park. They want to yell at anybody that wants to use it who isn’t a part of their gang. The people useing the beach, are using it legally, and they don’t like it. The solution they have given is to go to another park. Is that the american way? Give the terrorists what they want to apease them? Good, take that profit table away and see what it is really about. I bet if they took the profit table away their cause would totally disapear.

How is it that they can set up a table and start collecting money? They are basically running a business on public land. Every business I know has to buy or lease property but these sluggards are such con-artist they have even avoided that expense. If I showed up and started selling food, beverages and clothing they would boot me out of there in a heartbeat. I think this organization should be challenged on the legality that they are running a business on public property.

What would be really awesome is to let children use the Children’s Pool beach as is was originally designed and intended. There is nowhere else in San Diego County without rip currents and undertows (which is why it was originally designed and built).
After about 5 mintues of watching seals sleep the kids want to do stuff. So much for being for the benefit of children. The seals have over 1200 sites, why can’t the children have this one?
