Pro-seal rally on Saturday, May 7, a success

May 9, 2011 – 5:08 pm

La Jolla Seal issue on national TV this Thursday!

Watch me discuss our La Jolla seals with Jane Velez-Mitchell this Thursday, May 12, 4-5 PM PST (7-8 PM EST) on “Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell” HLN, CNN’s Headline News Channel

Jane is a big time animal lover and you will find many of her animal related stories in the “Man vs. Nature” column on HLN/CNN website.

After you watch the interview on Jane’s show, please send your comments to HLN/CNN about what you thought of the piece, that you are interested to see more animal-related stories from Jane’s show in the future, etc. These comments allow Jane to keep doing these pieces; Jane is an animal activist and vegan journalist, she is one of the very few voices on national mainstream television that covers these types of issues regularly, and she is a strong champion for animals.

To send your comments after viewing the show, either fill out the comment form at:

or you can send in your comments via email, to jane@cnn.com

Tune in this Thursday!!!

Dorota

Thanks to everyone who came out for the seals on Saturday May 7th!

Our rally attended by more than 40 dedicated pro-seal activists was a big success. Big thanks to Tim who organized the rally, helped us spread the word via Sparrow Media and Huffington Post and lead the protest with a peaceful and sophisticated approach.

La Jolla Light, San Diego Reader and several TV and radio stations covered the event.

We started the rally at the corner of Prospect and Girard in the heart of La Jolla Village
Marching through the city

As we marched through the streets of La Jolla, many pedestrians and business owners were giving us the “thumbs up”

When we left the seal beach to attend the rally, we counted 145 seals resting on the sand

Beach on Saturday morning before the rally

During our absence, several divers scared most of the seals in the water

When we came back, only a handful of animals were left in the west corner of the beach

Anti-seal activists disrespecting the seal habitat
Anti-seal bullies trying to intimidate pro-seal activists at the SealWatch booth
and on the sea wall
Wonderful seal supporters

The anti-seal activists came back on Sunday to advocate “shared” use of the seal beach. In this picture, “Ethan Kills” holds a sign saying “This is a man-made beach, feel free to cross the rope”

The following government officials should be asked why the seals of La Jolla aren’t being protected:

San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders
Phone: (619) 236-6330
Fax: (619) 236-7228
JerrySanders@sandiego.gov

City Council member Sherri Lightner (District 1 including La Jolla)

Please attend the court hearing on May 13!

On May 13, APRL is back in court to fight for the year-round rope that was unlawfully denied by the Planning Commission against the San Diego City Council vote of last year.

A follow up TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) hearing is set for 1:30 pm on Friday, May 13 in Dept. 60 (Judge Lisa Foster) at 330 W. Broadway St. Hopefully the judge will order to keep the rope up after May 15. Please attend and show your support. Free 3 h parking at Horton Plaza.

See you there!

Please remember that our seal protection and education program relies solely on public donations.

WE NEED YOUR FINANCIAL HELP IN ORDER TO CONTINUE! PLEASE DONATE TO OUR PROGRAM BY CLICKING ON THE “DONATE” BUTTON ON OUR WEBSITE

  1. 17 Comments! WOW! Read Below what others are saying.
  2. Where is the compassion in humanity?
Hopefully soon this beach will become a “protected seal beach” as the elephant seals are protected up north. It just has to be passed. Please find it in YOUR heart to help the “helpless”

  3. My kids and I were watching Jane from Canada,we think this is a very sad story and hope everything is done to help.
    Please leave the seals ALONE!!!!

By Sara Harrington on May 12, 2011

  4. A-It’s not like they’re there all year around, so the beach wouldn’t be off-limits forever!
B-It’s also not even warm enough in S. Calif. for sun bathing/swimming weather (although I know that’s not all you do there, but the water’s still pretty cold for children to be swimming, I think!).
These are the kind of people that will just buck anyone or anything that attempts to tell them no. The care for no one or thing besides themselves!!! They stink!! Leave the seals alone!!

By Michelle Tucker on May 12, 2011

  5. The people harassing these seals are the ones that obviously have no respect for the creatures that also have to live in this world. Everyone wonders why so many species have become extinct, this is just one of those reasons. The beach should be closed down and become a protected wild life enviroment. These people should be ashamed of themselves!

    By Matthew D on May 12, 2011

  6. Eek, I spoke, after watching t.v., before reading the “rest of the story.”

So, my opinion still stands, but are they moving the children’s pool to another location, since they did put the rope up for the entire year? Is that the knotheads only valid argument? Oh & that the old law doesn’t say, “HUMANS DON’T HARRASS THE SEALS, TOUCH THEM, GET W/IN 100FT OF THEM, RUN OR WALK TO THEM, SET YOUR CHILDREN ON THEM LIKE THEY ARE HORSES OR…”

By Michelle Tucker on May 12, 2011

  7. I thought the seals were protected wild life? Why are some people so mean, I can not comprehend this. What are the possibility of these bullies winning? I care!!
    Sincerely,
    Vanessa

  9. Martha,
Elephant seals are considered endangered due to there low populations and are offered special protection under other federal statue’s along with the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Harbor Seals are on the the Marine Mammal Protection act, but are not endangered, threatened, or having any population issues at all.
The Harbor Seals are far from “helpless” and there populations are doing quite well due to a variety of environmental reasons. There thriving. The Childrens Pool had a record number of births last year even as a shared use beach. The Shared use program works fine. Couple that with the rookery south at Point Loma, the Seals on Seal Rock 100 yards or so to the north and the Seals are in great shape.
Elephant Seals however are another story.

  10. Bravo to Dorota and Jane Velez-Mitchell – I pray this is the time for the seals to finally find a safe haven on Casa Beach.

By Colleen on May 12, 2011

  11. Selfish people who can’t inconvience themselves by allowing some space for these seals to rest. These people take over everything and leave nothing for anything nonhuman to survive. Stop being complete jerks!

By Kathy on May 12, 2011

  12. I had the opportunity to visit LaJolla several years ago. While there we visited this beach and observed the seals from a distance. It is my fondest memory of that trip.

“HUMANS AREN’T THE ONLY SPECIES ON EARTH – WE JUST ACT LIKE IT’!

Why can’t those thugs just leave these creatures alone?

By Chris on May 12, 2011

  13. Actually, there are seals everywhere. On the other side of the wall, on the rock 100 yards to the north, point lome, ocean beach, ocean side… It is like saying “close the playground for the pigeons, why not close 1 playground for helpless pigeons?”

The seals are there year round, when do you think they are not there? Seals don’t migrate.

Harbor seals not not engangered, threatened or even depleated. According to IUCN (the agency in charge of the list) they are “of least concern”

  14. What drives so many members of our species to feel that we own and have the right to interfere with, control, and dominate every other species on the planet?

We should leave the seals be! Resting on this beach is vital to their survival. Our small inconvenience of not using the beach while the seals are resting there not a valid reason for driving them back into the ocean.

By Maryanne Appel on May 13, 2011

  15. What’s wrong with these IDIOTS!!!!

Why do they want the seals gone? They SUCK.

Don’t these assholes know they need to SHARE the beach with the wildlife?!?!?!?!?

I can’t believe those monsters with there harpoon guns are allowed on the beach. I saw this one person down there and she had it totally right. He said that she saw this show on PBS and that it said the hunters were all drunk. He was totally right. I bet those divers harpoon the seals with their harpoons because they are drunk and have know scruples like that lady with the big adams apple said.

  16. SAVE this beach for the SEALS!!
I want to help; what can I do??
THANKS, Jane Velez Mitchell, for letting us know about this dilemma for the seals!

    By Melissa B. on May 13, 2011

  17. I’m surprised to see this on news. I have been there many times and the seals were always being left alone. I thought there were rules established for visitor not to disturb the seal. What happened recently to change this. This is sad. I think we should leave the seals alone. They deserve this small section of beach for themselves.
